A chipmunk that can eat alone is not automatically ready. It also needs adult-like speed, hiding, digging/caching behavior, good body condition, weather acclimation and enough season remaining to establish a burrow and food resources.

2. Choose the release site by species and origin
Return as close to the original find territory as practical and legal unless that location is unsafe. Eastern chipmunks commonly use wooded areas with vegetation, rocks, roots and burrowing structure; western chipmunks may use conifer forest, shrubland, talus, sagebrush or other specialized habitats. The correct site is the habitat used by that local species — not simply any place with trees.
- Chipmunks of the same species are already present nearby
- Natural food and cover are abundant
- Soil/roots/rocks provide secure burrow opportunities
- Reliable water is accessible where the species normally needs it
- Low immediate risk from free-roaming cats, trapping, poison or heavy traffic
- Landowner permission and local wildlife rules are satisfied
3. Pick a safe weather window
Avoid release just before heavy rain, storms, extreme heat/cold or a major weather shift. The chipmunk-specific protocol recommends at least 2–3 days of dry weather after release when possible.
4. Use the nest box as a release box
- Let the chipmunk spend the final acclimation period using the nest box in the pre-release enclosure.
- Fill it with dry leaves/grass or other local natural nesting material.
- At release, allow the animal to leave voluntarily rather than dumping or chasing it out.
- Keep the familiar box available as a retreat while the chipmunk establishes a natural burrow.
- Continue transitional food and water nearby without encouraging approach to people.
5. Late-season or winter cases
Eastern chipmunks and many other species spend winter underground and rely heavily on stored food, with periods of torpor rather than uninterrupted deep hibernation. A juvenile released too late may not have time to create a safe burrow and cache. Late-season cases may require delayed release/overwintering under a permitted rehabilitator’s plan instead of forcing a calendar release.
