There is no universal squirrel menu
Nut-eating is iconic, but Sciuridae occupies too many habitats for a single diet description. Depending on species and season, wild squirrels may consume seeds, nuts, fruits, flowers, buds, bark, grasses, forbs, roots, fungi, lichens, insects, eggs or other opportunistic animal foods.
Diet should always be separated into what a wild species has been documented eating and what is appropriate to offer an animal in human care. Those are different questions; the first belongs in Learn, the second in Guide.
High-value seeds shape behavior
Acorns, hickory nuts, walnuts, conifer seeds and other concentrated plant foods can become major seasonal resources. In mast-producing forests, annual seed crops may vary sharply from year to year, changing movement, caching and competition.
Some squirrels specialize heavily on particular seed systems. Red-squirrel relatives associated with conifers can clip cones and accumulate large seed stores. Gray and fox squirrels often spread individual nuts among many caches.
Buds, fruits and green vegetation matter too
When hard mast is scarce or seasonally unavailable, squirrels can switch to other plant parts. Buds and flowers may be important in spring, fruits and seeds later in the year, and ground squirrels may consume substantial quantities of grasses and forbs.
Plant use can change with local vegetation. A species account should name documented foods from its own range rather than copying a generic “squirrel diet” list.
Flying squirrels can connect forests to fungi
Northern flying squirrels are well known for eating hypogeous fungi, including truffles. USDA Forest Service studies have found fungal material to be a frequent and diverse component of their diets in Pacific Northwest forests.
Ectomycorrhizal fungi form partnerships with tree roots. When squirrels consume fungal fruiting bodies and later deposit viable spores elsewhere, they can participate in fungal dispersal. That places the animal inside a larger relationship among fungi, trees and forest predators.
Opportunistic omnivory
Many squirrels are plant-focused but not strict herbivores. Insects and other animal foods may be taken opportunistically, and the importance of those foods differs by species.
The presence of an unusual food in a stomach-content or observation record should not be inflated into the species’ primary diet. Frequency, season and nutritional contribution matter.
Why squirrels cache food
Storage shifts food from a moment of abundance into a future period of scarcity. A squirrel must evaluate handling time, transport risk, competitors and the probability that a stored item will remain useful.
Scatter-hoarding spreads risk across many caches. Larder-hoarding concentrates food and makes defense more practical. Neither strategy is universally superior; each reflects the ecology of the species and food resource.
The diet changes before the squirrel does
Wild food availability changes continuously. Flowering, fruiting, seed maturation, rainfall, snow cover and insect abundance can all shift what is available long before a casual observer notices a change in body condition.
Seasonal diet information is especially valuable when interpreting caching, migration within a home range or changes in time spent on the ground.
Grazers, seed eaters and burrow-based foragers
Ground-squirrel diets can look very different from tree-squirrel diets. Prairie dogs rely heavily on grasses and forbs and can alter vegetation structure around colonies. Marmots and other ground squirrels may emphasize herbaceous vegetation during the growing season.
Burrow location, plant community and seasonal dormancy shape the feeding window. A species that hibernates for months has a fundamentally different annual energy budget from a year-round active tree squirrel.
Diet research has limitations
Researchers infer diet using direct observation, stomach or fecal analysis, stable isotopes and food-availability surveys. Each method sees a different part of the diet.
Fecal analysis can detect hard-to-digest material such as fungal spores well, while soft foods may be harder to identify. Stable isotopes can estimate assimilated diet categories but may not identify every specific food. Good species pages compare methods rather than treating one technique as a complete menu.
Eating and storing food changes ecosystems
Squirrels are both consumers and movers of biological material. They destroy some seeds by eating them, relocate others through caching, spread fungal spores and become prey that transfers energy to predators.
The ecological result depends on recovery rate, seed survival, habitat and species. The simple claim that squirrels “plant forests because they forget nuts” captures one possible outcome but misses the much larger seed-predator and cache-competition system.
Natural diet is not permission to feed wildlife
USDA APHIS warns that feeding wildlife can create disease concentration, conflict and poor nutrition. An animal voluntarily eating a human-provided item does not establish that the item is healthy or that regular feeding is harmless.

Useful diet information separates major foods, seasonal foods, opportunistic foods, caching strategy and evidence source. Where diet is poorly studied, Unknown is more accurate than importing a menu from a related species.
