Ground squirrels spend much of life on or below ground. Digging depth, horizontal room, substrate, lookout points and seasonal rhythms all matter.
Dig-proof barriers, secure lids and double-door entry are valuable because an escaped burrower may disappear inside walls or flooring. Maintain backup safe housing for substrate replacement, repairs, fighting or veterinary recovery.
Long-term squirrel care is easier when the environment assumes the animal will chew, dig, climb, squeeze, test latches and investigate anything new.
